Recent projects: instrumentation for demanding test environments
September 28, 2026
Our recent work includes gas turbine Hot SCR instrumentation, preparation of a CMC component for thermal shock testing and strain gauge installation on extensometers for a pure hydrogen atmosphere.
Hot SCR: thermal and vibration measurements
We installed weldable strain gauges and thermocouples on a Hot SCR structure to support the assessment of thermal loading during startup and shutdown, and vibration caused by high-velocity flue gas.
The measurement programme aims to provide field data for comparison with CAE and CFD predictions, improving low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue risk assessments. Our scope covered sensor installation and cable routing, with mineral-insulated wiring in the hot zone. Specialist companies handle signal conditioning and data acquisition; we assist with the interpretation of measured values.
CMC component: thermal shock testing up to 900°C
We adapted our ceramic cement formulation to improve adhesion to customer-supplied CMC specimens. Following the customer’s specimen tests, we instrumented an aerospace component with six tri-axial rosettes and 1-metre lead wires. Planned chamber tests will involve rapid heating to 900°C to capture transient strains during thermal shock.
Extensometers for a pure hydrogen atmosphere
We installed strain gauges on extensometer legs in a full-bridge configuration, preparing them for testing in a pure hydrogen atmosphere.
